Stealthy, fully-backpacked ninjas descended on the streets of Calcutta this week in dramatic protest against a Supreme Court of India ruling banning full-length anime costumes.
The decision follows multiple heatstroke-related deaths involving citizens wrapping themselves in what one official described as “portable saunas made of black tarp and sadness.”
A NinjaโDemonstrating Some Sick Moves
โItโs dishonorable and culturally offensive to wear anything other than traditional black garbage-bag gear,โ declared protest leader Al-Kawaii Ajinamoto, spokesperson for the movement.
The statement was followed by an impromptu backflip and a weakly executed shuriken throw.
Ajinamoto warned that if the ban continues, the groupโs โShogun warriorsโ will be forced to escalate.
โWe may commit hara-kiriโnot with swords, but with plastic vests and novelty explosives from a cosplay shop on Shopee,โ she added, solemnly.
The protest is rumored to have been inspired by rogue Yakuza clans collaborating with Indiaโs growing anime cosplay underground.
Despite the legal threat, many ninja cosplayers vow to continue their LARPing ritualsโincluding stealth shopping, slow-motion rooftop runs, and solemn tea ceremonies carried out in full tactical gear.
